How to find a culturally competent therapist

Most therapists mean well, but “nice” doesn’t heal the wound of hearing, “You feel unsafe because you’re Latina?” or “Your immigrant parents are over-involved, just cut them off.”

To be culturally aware and supportive, therapists should have knowledge and understanding about different cultures, the history of cultural oppression in the United States and related social movements that fought for their rights.

  • To find a culturally competent therapist, research online directories, ask for recommendations, and ask about cultural awareness during initial consultations.

  • Ask friends, family, or community members for referrals, especially those who share your cultural background. Cultural or religious organizations may also provide recommendations. 

  • Research therapist websites for mentions of working with diverse populations or cultural awareness. Look for information about their experience with specific cultural groups, their therapeutic approach, and how they address cultural issues in therapy.

  • Ask therapists questions. Ask about their experience with your specific cultural background, how they approach cultural issues, and how they handle diversity in therapy. Observe how they communicate and whether they demonstrate an understanding of your cultural differences. 

  • Trust your gut. A good therapy match should leave you feeling safe and supported. It’s important to trust your instincts and choose the therapist you think will be the best fit for you. If you don’t feel comfortable or understood, it’s okay to find a new therapist.

Don’t settle for close enough. Your mental health is already political. Let’s make the search political for you, not against you.
